Beauty on board

Posted by Kay

Due to our jobs, Thandie & I have accumulated our fair share of air mileage and are all too aware of the effects that flying-especially long haul- has on the body. We’re frequently expected to be at our best at the other end, sometimes as soon as we get off the plane. Suffice to say, we love collecting a tip or two.

So, inspired by Thandie’s recent shoot to launch British Airways A380 aircraft ‘red carpet route’ to Los Angeles (right), we thought we’d share a few natural remedies along with Thandie’s make-up look which she did herself ( I was already booked harrumph) on the day.

Over to Thandie:

“Once I’ve prepped and perfected my base (see here) I always start by brushing a translucent powder over the lid area – to stop eye shadow colour from sticking and creating an uneven finish.

Next I created the ‘shape’ using Stila Stay All Day liquid eye liner.

The dress was a heavy block of colour so I knew that I needed to balance that with a strong eye.

I lined super-close to my top lashes, strengthening the line at the outer edge and creating a slight ‘Maria Callas’ extension. Stila’s liner brush is GREAT for really painting into the roots of the lashes and a useful trick for creating the illusion of denser lashes. LA based Make up artist Jo Strettel  gave me this tip years ago when she made me up for the Premiere of Gridlock’d.

I kept the rest of the eye make-up simple by using Chanel‘s wonder pot Illusion D’Ombre in Mirifique. Kay introduced me to these, and they are sublime. Rich pigment and amazingly fine sparkle. Application takes practice. I use a finger or small, fat, rounded shadow brush depending on the depth of colour I’m after. Illusion-d'Ombre-Mirifique-chanelFor this look I used the brush – and followed the crease of my top lid from inner to outer – and then blended until I achieved my desired sultry, smoky eye. (If you’re using a finger for application remember to have a moist hand wipe nearby to clean your finger – nothing worse than applying cheek colour later, and seeing a black smear across your face because you forgot to clean up!)

For corrections or clean ups on the eye I use Q Tips (cotton buds) dipped in liquid foundation – that way I only remove back to my base application.Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge

Blush – Good old Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in (Sadly discontinued try Blushed Rose) Pink Truffle – to contour my cheeks and for colour. I use my middle finger for this, but you can use a Kabuki Brush.

Lips – Neals Yard clear lip gloss with more Bobbi Brown Pink Truffle to tint the centre of my lips.”

Spoken like a true make-up artist Thandie (we joke that she doesn’t need me anymore).
Fabulous evening make-up to wear in our destination-Check. What about the feeling good at 30,000 feet part?

“For wellbeing in the air, a London based acupuncturist called Robert Ogilvie gave me a great tip many years ago – to take an Arnica 30c remedy every 2 hours. Apparently this can help prevent organs bruising as they swell due to the altitude;  speeding up the recovery from jet lag.

RR_UK_Drop_09_LR_s__39913_zoomI always have Bach Rescue Remedy with me when I fly, I add drops into water to 50685keep me rested and calm, and drink as much water as I can – usually a good 2 litres (including hot water with lemon).

My friend and Homeopath, Anabel Kindersley recommends using a little Lavender essential oil around the edge of the nostrils when flying because the anti-microbial properties help protect against airborne infections in-flight.

Lastly, good old Neals Yard do a fantastic ‘Remedies To Roll’ specifically for traveling. The essential oils are in a 9ml roll and the smell (Rosemary, Lavender,  Frankincense, Neroli & Clary Sage oils) is reassuring and divine. I apply it to my wrist pulse points.  Another great thing about all of the above is that they’re small enough for a handbag.”
