I met Leona on a BA flight from LA to London. By pure coincidence we’d been seated across from each other, and when I arrived she was trying to get her seat switched so she could have more privacy. But when I sat down, she just beamed. We basically talked the entire flight; about family, traveling, where we grew up, school days, creativity, horseriding and vegetarianism. The sweetest moment was when she told me that growing up, I’d been one of her role models. It made me proud to know that I’d boosted the confidence that has lead Leona to shine her light and magic on captivated audiences everywhere. And her beauty? Well, with a sweet heart like hers no wonder she looks like an angel.
I remember putting on my mums mascara for the first time when I was about 12. I had such a shock as I’d never seen myself with make up on before so it was a lot to get used to!
When I’m on holiday and sun kissed and relaxed. I don’t wear makeup or do much with my hair, I just feel very natural and confident.
I always remember my mums red lips, blond hair and perfectly manicured nails. She kind of reminded me of Olivia Newton John when she was in Grease! She would spend quite a bit of time on her hair and there was always lots of hair spray involved.
I love playing with makeup. When I was younger I used to use it to cover up, but as I’ve grown up I’ve realised that its all about enhancing rather than masking. I love experimenting with colours on my lips like bright pinks, corals, deep reds. I think a bare eye and a bright lip is always really striking.
My dad would shyly give compliments to my mum when she got dressed up to go out. It was so sweet although back then I thought it was gross haha!
I used to wear white eye shadow on my eyes which made it look like I had no eyelashes and also really closed my eye. I wonder how my mum let me go out of the house looking like a mole!
My mum and I are very much into natural, cruelty free organic beauty products. I’ve just done a cruelty-free range with The Bodyshop which I’m so in love with and it’s also community fair trade and completely ethical.
I’m a huge fan of oils. My mum makes a great mix of coconut and essential oils that I use in the shower. It leaves the skin so soft and hydrated.
I’m constantly doing my makeup in crazy places. I’m always traveling so it’s mostly on the road. But probably the weirdest place would be while riding my horse. I sometimes top up my lipstick on our way home from a trail ride!
I would love to see more of a broad portrayal of beauty. When I was younger I remember always wanting to straighten my hair to fit in with the ideals that were so heavily portrayed to me in the media. Seeing mixed race women in the media was a very rare thing and so I had no beauty ideals that aligned with how I looked. I do believe it’s getting better but I feel we are still a long way off.
I just performed at Kew gardens for the final show of my tour. I was so emotional I broke down after I came off stage and my mascara ran everywhere. They were happy tears though, but I will miss being on the road, all be it only for a few months!
