Thandie & I met artist Phoebe Davies at one of Eve Ensler‘s One Billion Rising Events in London’s Southbank center (where she also shows various artwork).
“I was working as an artist with a group of at-risk teenage women in South London who didn’t necessarily identify themelves as artists or ‘creative people. Yet every week when I returned to work, these women were revealing their artistic output by wearing extraordinarily detailed nail art”.
Whilst exploring current attitudes to gender equality, feminism, female expectations and their aspirations, and drawing upon the culturally-based trend for ‘nail art’, Phoebe was inspired to to collaborate with these young women to create a series of printed nailwraps depicting people of personal influence and significance. These designs are then applied and distributed from free pop up nail bars hosted by the young women, creating sites for open feminist discussion.

Nail Art with a difference

Phoebe has since worked with numerous women groups across the UK from secondary schools to female offender centres, in each case designing bespoke nail sets specific to the group’s nominations be it Pussy Riot, Malala Yousafzai or Angela Davies.
You can catch the nail bar in action as part of Fierce Festival program in Birmingham later this year.
Phoebe is currently designing a whole nail set of nailwraps for retail distribution across the UK and internationally, entitled Fenails: Activism Now.

The new set hopes to share the work of women from across the globe currently campaigning for social, economic and political change, with 10% of all retail profits used to support creative projects for marginalised and at-risk women in the UK and internationally.

Fenails: Activism Now aims to be available for distribution in 2015,

however as this is a charitable venture Phoebe is looking for ways to support and fundraiser to cover the production start up costs, enabling the project to reach as many young women as possible.
