Q+A with Misty Copeland

meme12Ballerina Misty Copeland is the second black woman to gain solo status with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), becoming the first black woman ever to play The Firebird in 2012. Misty did not start ballet dancing until the age of 13, when her ballet teacher (and later mentor) Cindy Bradley, spotted her talent.  Misty has triumphed over adversity in a predominantly white world, and her achievements include performing with Prince, commercials for Coach and Dr. Pepper, developing her own line of sports clothing and becoming national ambassador of the year for the Boys & Girls Club.

This year Misty released her memoir, “Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina”, which chronicles her journey growing up in poverty in San Pedro, California, to the ABT.

1. What is your earliest make-up memory?alumni_m_cope

I was SUCH a late bloomer. I refused to wear makeup unless I was on stage performing. I wore clear mascara and lip gloss all through high school. But at 13 when I stepped onto a stage for the first time, my memories of makeup were of a magical transformation. I wore the brightest red lipstick on my full lips, far too big for my tiny face. My mom always told me I had the biggest and brightest smile up there.

2. I feel most beautiful when…

With Prince

I feel most beautiful in the summer with no make up and just a glow but also when I’m completely made up for the stage. I become whatever character it is I’m playing, but I’ve learned along the way just the right way to apply my makeup for performing and I feel like a queen. It adds so much to my performance.

3. When you were a child, what was your Mother’s beauty routine?

My mother had this three-sided mirror, two of which were magnified. It was covered in small light bulbs surrounding its frame. She would sit in front of it for hours. She never left the house without mascara and lipstick on. Usually a coral color.

4. Is make-up a chore or a delight?

I don’t wear a ton in my daily life so when I apply it for an event or to perform, it’s a delight!

5. Did your father refer to your Mother’s beauty, and how?

My whole family did. We were proud of her beauty. No words needed. I always thought she looked like Mariah Carey when she first came out in the 90’s.

In the back of a car, on the floor of a bathroom, on an airplane.  Lol.

9. What would you like to see more of in the beauty industry?

More natural beauty. Make up that appears invisible and highlights your beauty.

10. When was the last time your mascara ran, and why?

4 copyFrom crying after a performance. Happy tears from my debut of Odette in Swan Lake this season in a small show for kids.
