Naturally Liplined

Posted by Kay

Lipliner. Such a misunderstood and much-maligned product.

For many it brings up the image of the porn-influenced make-up style of the 90’s, lips heavily overdrawn in crude brown pencil, or the ‘heavy-natural‘ make-up look of 90’s R n B/Rap stars, born from the cosmetic DNA of Make-Up Artists like Kevyn Aucoin, who practically ‘rebuilt’ faces using contour and liner. 19feb58f28af466596e7a32798d1e71b

Then there’s the ‘edgy-femme’ of the Chola sub-culture where girls used black pencil around a frosted pink inner lip in sync with extreme brow pencil, to make one thing very clear- ‘I got attitude’.

Sub-cultural trends aside, a good, natural lipliner that’s close to your own lip colour is a product I think that every woman without completely perfect lips can benefit from. Who doesn’t have lips that are just a teeny bit wonky, or have an overly small or large top or bottom lip? Personally I like to ‘flesh out’ my top lip a little, and create definition where there isn’t on my bottom lip, I find it makes a huge difference plus as you get older (unlike our thighs) our lips lose their volume.

Like I said, the key is to find one that is not pinker, or more brown that your natural lips but like your actual lips.

This is not as easy as it sounds as most brands seem to see lipliner as lipcolour, which unless you are using a strong red lipstick to wear on top of it, looks very obvious.

Then all you need is a little Nuxe or Eos Lip Balm !

Here are some of my favourites, modelled by one of our contributing photographers Lily Bertrand-Webb.

Thanks Kay! As someone who doesn’t like to wear lipstick but wouldn’t mind wearing lip pencils instead, would you recommend putting on the lip balm before or after?

A while before, then blot off, and always overnight.
