Lucky me got to finally work with the divine Kerry Washington recently while she was in London to pick up her ‘Woman of the year’ Glamour award. Her role as crisis management’ lady boss Olivia Pope has ensured Kerry a firm foot in the door of many a home’s consciousness and making her up got a chorus of ‘Ooh I love her‘-s from women I mentioned it to.
Loosely based on Judy Smith (George W Bush’s Deputy Press Secretary), Shonda Rhimes created the first lead role for an African American woman on a primetime network drama since Diahann Carroll in 1968’s ‘Julia’ and Teresa Graves starred in ‘Get Christy Love’ in the early 70s.… Read more...

Thandie and I will often be found in natural foodstores, we love unprocessed food and you’ll often find us in the kitchen-the best room in the home!
This is how I have chanced upon many natural brands such as Antipodes Skincare, Giovanni as well as Jason’s Haircare, John Masters Organic Haircare (we’ve featured these before), Lavera, Weleda and many more.
So the other day while I was stocking up in Planet Organic in London’s Westbourne Grove I discovered another lovely brand full of non-petrochemical suprises called Inika.
I loved this Rosehip blush so much that I bought two: one for my make-up kit and one to try on Thandie- cream blush is a staple in her kit and for us, dewy-looking cheeks are healthier and more vibrant looking than flat matte.… Read more...

“Beauty is health, health is beauty’ Dr Perricone MD.
Nicholas Perricone is a board-certified Dermatologist, world renowned healthy aging expert who became known from his research into inflammation being the leading cause of ageing and disease- which is now part of mainstream thinking.
He pioneered the idea of utilizing nutrient antioxidents into ‘cosmeceutical skincare’ and created a successful brand based on his discoveries.
I came across his ‘no make-up make-up’ recently so I brought it to LA to try on Thandie..
Look at the results! That perfect ‘something but nothing’, ‘you but better’ look that screams ‘what’s not to love?’ and ‘who needs photoshop?’

So, I was immediately curious when I came across Bare Minerals Serum Foundation. It has a good range of colours – the pigments are more intense without the heavier creaminess of regular foundations. It has a liquid consistency but don’t let that fool you into using too much – a little of this goes a long way.… Read more...

Lipstick color – the options are endless. Some people have their signature shade – like my friend Polly who rocked Rimmel’s ‘Heather Shimmer’ all through Uni. The irridescent mauve colour was as much ‘her’ as her ringlets, smile, friendship. Eve Ensler – that RED mouth – giving added power to the final “CUNT!” of her one woman show The Vagina Monologues.
I noticed at this year’s launch of One Billion Rising in NYC, that Eve replaced her signature red mouth with silver. We all approved, and interpreted the move like we were reading poetry. Which we were.… Read more...

‘Influenced by the glamour associated with mid 90s–00s hip hop culture’,
MDMFlow is the concept of Florence Adepoju, a Scientist with a BSc (Hons) in Cosmetic Science from the London College of Fashion.
Having spent undergraduate life studying and working in luxury beauty retail, Florence (Flow) decided upon graduating in July 2013 to do what was in her heart, to create the brand she’d always wanted. All MDMflow lipsticks are handmade and cruelty-free.
I remember being about 10 mixing my mum’s red nail polishes on a piece of tissue, then putting it on the radiator to dry and being so fascinated by the texture when it dried, but disappointed at the colour. … Read more...

I first came across this lip balm on a Ralph Lauren ad job when the model I was working with had very sore, cracked lips and insisted I use this. It was the only lip balm that didn’t make her lips irritated.
I then discovered another aesthetic bonus-the lip balm wasn’t glossy-which doesn’t work so well in photographs-plus it had a pleasant, honey-flavoured beeswax texture that was much easier to wear than gloopy, petroleum-based balms.
Since then it’s been by my bedside every night for me to use before bed, and is forever in my kit to keep my models and actresses lips looking, and feeling soft.… Read more...

Forward by Susannah, a friend of ours who visited Beirut recently and met with some of the Syrian women who are among at least one and a half million people who have been forced to leave their homes and flee to camps in Lebanon.
Hearing her experiences while there were precious and fascinating, I was hearing stories untold by the media who are no longer even there. And like many places in times of war, fear and displacement, she discovered a community longing for creativity, passion and expression.
