Thandie and I met Antonia Burrell when she came to listen to a panel that we were on, discussing the beauty industry and how women of colour were being represented. For me, the best thing about the event was not only getting a chance to meet our readers, but the unexpected amount of inspired entrepreneurs such as Antonia, all of whom made Thandie and I feel hugely warm and fuzzy inside, like we were really on the right track with our site.

As well as having her naturally-derived skincare collection, Antonia is a big favourite with beauty editors who love treatments such as her ‘Natural Lift Facial’.Read more...

Naturally Liplined

Posted by Kay

Lipliner. Such a misunderstood and much-maligned product.

For many it brings up the image of the porn-influenced make-up style of the 90’s, lips heavily overdrawn in crude brown pencil, or the ‘heavy-natural‘ make-up look of 90’s R n B/Rap stars, born from the cosmetic DNA of Make-Up Artists like Kevyn Aucoin, who practically ‘rebuilt’ faces using contour and liner. 19feb58f28af466596e7a32798d1e71b

Then there’s the ‘edgy-femme’ of the Chola sub-culture where girls used black pencil around a frosted pink inner lip in sync with extreme brow pencil, to make one thing very clear- ‘I got attitude’.

Sub-cultural trends aside, a good, natural lipliner that’s close to your own lip colour is a product I think that every woman without completely perfect lips can benefit from.… Read more...

Smokin’ Eyes

Posted by Kay

The Smokey eye is one make-up look that never goes out of style,  pop some heels in your bag in the morning, along with some eye make-up and boom-who need’s to go home to change after work? You have all you need to go from day to night.

Be sure to conceal your under-eye area (see our post here) and wear a little blush.

Once skin is prepped, apply black pencil onto the upper lash line, plus a little on the bottom (if you are fair, use a brown pencil) and smudge in. Apply Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear Gel Sparkle in Topaz over your lid-this stuff is so idiot-proof that all you need is a clean finger!… Read more...

Dija Ayodele on Facial Hair-stigma, shame & solutions

Facialist & Skincare Consultant Dijas Ayodele

Facialist & Skincare Consultant Dija Ayodele

Dija Ayodele has been a facialist and skincare consutant for almost a decade, she enjoys helping people learn about their skin and how to get the best out of it. Thank you for yet another informative piece Dija!

Each morning when Karen* wakes up, she runs her fingers out of habit across her chin and around the sides of her jaw to check for stubble. A quick mental assessment is then taken as to whether she needs the hair removal cream- could she simply get away with tweezing? Paranoid that someone will notice her condition at work, Karen often disappears to the bathroom with a hand mirror and tweezers and pluck away at her skin until she is confident that there are no hairs showing.… Read more...

Lily Betrand-Webb holding on to Antipodes Hand and Face Cream

I’m often to be found in natural foodstores as I love to keep my fridge full of fresh, organic vegetables and fruit. It’s also where I find a lot of my skincare and toiletry supplies; my deodorant (Weleda Rose), my skincare (Ren, Jurlique, Pai and Nude) and the baby section for the loveliest body moisturisers, baby wipes and cotton buds for use at work.

This is where I stumbled upon New Zealand brand Antipodes. I have very dry hands and sneakily used their tester hand cream because I had none on me that day.… Read more...

Q+A with Misty Copeland

meme12Ballerina Misty Copeland is the second black woman to gain solo status with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), becoming the first black woman ever to play The Firebird in 2012. Misty did not start ballet dancing until the age of 13, when her ballet teacher (and later mentor) Cindy Bradley, spotted her talent.  Misty has triumphed over adversity in a predominantly white world, and her achievements include performing with Prince, commercials for Coach and Dr. Pepper, developing her own line of sports clothing and becoming national ambassador of the year for the Boys & Girls Club.

This year Misty released her memoir, “Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina”, which chronicles her journey growing up in poverty in San Pedro, California, to the ABT.Read more...

Lotte ‘I love cheap make-up’ Andersen in Acne Longline Denim Shirt

You may have noticed London’s coolest party organiser Lotte (featured here) and Phoebe appearing a lot in our site at the moment, thats because I invited them to the HQ (presently my house) for a day’s shooting for ThandieKay, the idea being that they would style themselves (they’ve got oodles of it) and choose a whole bunch of make-up and hairstyling products for a good day’s collab.

Lotte ‘I love cheap make-up’ Andersen chose Top Shop’s Smokey Eye Palette and Barry M’s Super Soft Eye Crayon in No3 and No7 which turned out to a huge hit when worn together.

Daniel Sandler Watercolour Blush

Posted by Kay DS TRIP

I discovered this bright little product via our friend Millie Kendall from BeautyMart. It’s non-oily, non- pore-clogging formula is very different from any blusher I’ve ever used, and perfect for those who love the natural appearance of cream blush, but want something with more staying power and less shine.

Artist Phoebe Collings-James wearing TRIP

Our model, fine artist Phoebe Collings-James, is wearing it here in Trip. I love this tangerine shade, it looks very bright in the bottle, but is great on tanned, or darker skintones.

Use with a ‘Stippling Brush’ as shown.

Moroccanoil Treatment Light

Posted by Kay Moroccanoil_Treatment_100ml_1392288768

The Moroccanoil story is that co-founder Carmen Tal was inspired to bring this treatment oil to the wider market after a bad colour service damaged her hair. Whilst travelling in Israel, she was taken to a salon that used an oil-based treatment that transformed her hair from damaged to shiny, smooth and manageable.

The brand has been said to have ‘kicked off’ the retail trend for hair oils, and has established itself as an effective, at-home, luxury treatment for hair that has a tendency to be dry, course or damaged.… Read more...

Nude Skincare

Posted by Kay

I’ve been a fan of Nude Skincare ever since it was founded by Bryan Meehan and Ali Hewson in 2007 and believe that even if you’re not an advocate for ‘natural skincare’, that most of us will at one time or another find the need for gentler products, and perhaps adopt them into our skincare somehow.

After all, who hasn’t had irritated skin, or dry and sore lips? This is the where the door to the world of natural skincare often opens, and where many people who want relief and results will find themselves.

Not convinced? What if I asked you if you’d prefer perfumed petrochemicals on that little patch of itchy, inflamed skin or something so natural you could practically eat it, maybe that might?… Read more...
