Q and A with Chastity Brown

Post by Thandie.

Chastity Brown‘s ‘After You’ was my comfort song of 2013 (from her last album Back-Road Highways). Her voice – like rich, buttery shortbread – coupled with her guitar and syncopated African rhythms; serves up true soul food. It’s no surprise that she’s gaining a passionate fan base, and the live experience is definitely where she’s at. Honest, raw and powerful – she’s a wonderful storyteller and beautiful human. Chastity made herself generously available when I reached out and asked her to contribute to ThandieKay. Try and find a tour date near you and welcome to the warm heart and beautiful sound of Chastity Brown.

1. What is your earliest make-up memory?

When I was twelve, my mother got into selling make-up and hosting “beauty parties” for her friends. I was allowed to sit and watch as they went through the endless amounts of colour to find the right one. I remember feeling that it was exhilarating to sit with the adults at the same time, taking note that I thought they were applying way too much.

2. I feel most beautiful when…When I wake up and the morning is still…also, when I’m in nature and there are no mirrors.

3. When you were a child, what was your Mother’s beauty routine?
All throughout my childhood I remember my mother in the early hours of the morning doing her workout routine. I could hear her deep breathing exercises all the way on the other side of the house. I realise now that she practiced taking care of her body as a whole as a way of being beautiful.

4. Is make-up a chore or a delight?
I consider myself a ‘plain jane’ and only wear make-up when I have to…so it’s a bit of a chore.

5. Did your father refer to your Mother’s beauty, and how?
My father passed away when I was seven. I knew by watching the way my mother carried herself that she knew she was beautiful. She had and still has a fire in her eyes that I am most certain my pop saw.

6. What’s been your worst beauty mishap?
A bra breaking in the middle of one of my concerts and by this I mean completely falling apart. Luckily my guitar covered it up.

7. If you could give one beauty gift what would it be?
A pocket size note that reads “love yourself”.

8. Where’s the craziest place

8. Where’s the craziest place you’ve done your make-up?
Music festivals can be so exciting and backstage is usually accommodating for all artists. However, some only offer portable toilets, a tall plastic rectangle with a small hole to do your business and a tiny warped mirror the size of a hand. That is the craziest place to put on make-up!

9. What would you like to see more of in the beauty industry?
I would like to see more simple

Chastity - export29. What would you like to see more of in the beauty industry?
I would like to see more simple and organic ways to accent individual beauty.

10. When was the last time your mascara ran, and why?
As silly as it may sound…it wasn’t until the last interview in ThandieKay with Lisa Fischer that I remembered that there’s water-proof mascara! Aah…That’s what I get for always rushing in and out of the make-up store.

Chastity is performing dates throughout the US this Summer, and arriving in the UK in the Fall. Her first date will be in London on September 17th at Bush Hall.

One of her favourite not for profit organisations is in Minneapolis, MN where she lives. It’s called Free Arts Minnesota. They work with youth who have experienced poverty, homelessness, abuse, and mental illness; using the healing power of artistic expression. Chastity volunteered with some of their kids, and “was very moved by the whole experience. I believe they will have a lasting legacy of healing through art.”
