Whatever the decade, whatever the style and whatever the woman, there are SO many variations on the ultimate party make-up look, the ‘if all else fails to bring a look together’ number one default setting, the smoky eye.
And boy, did Thandie bust one of her most smokin’ looks at the Vanity Fair Oscar party the other week, all without my help as I was in London! If this acting lark doesn’t work out Thandie, this make-up artist’s in TROUBLE.
Stepping out in Jimmy Choo’s, and with the help of the fabulous stylist Rosemary KokuhilwaThandie pulled in a pretty black ‘slip-inspired’ dress by Dennis Blasso (is it a slip, is it a dress? Who cares when it rocks!) and sprinkled her decollette inPippa Small necklaces.
Eyes Like to Party Make-up Details
Thandie & I love to use a sheer, light fluid foundation like Make Up Forever’s Face & Body or Mud HD Air foundation in Mustard. Applied with sponge to even out, rather than hide the skin.
Concealer is VERY important when wearing smoky eyes, it is the difference between getting away with it, and simply looking tired and ghoulish..
Thandie used Kevin Aucoin’s Sensual Skin Enhancer. Another fave which is fantastic for hiding gray under the eyes is Laura Mercier’s Secret Concealer and Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer. Both brands have concealers in peach to terracotta tones, and are ideal for ALL skintones.
See our post on concealer!
Finally, set the skin with a light dusting of Loose Powder on the T Zone, keep those cheeks dewy and fresh!
Surrat Blush in Rouger
Surrat Blush in Rougeur, and Eye Shadows in Burgundy Brown and Cuivre
Chanel Liquid Eyeliner in Black (though L’Oreal Superliner also excellent), Ilia Mascara in Nightfall.
Stila Eyebow Pen in Medium
Thandie and I usually use individuals because of the more natural look, but they can be REALLY HARD to put on yourself (plus I wasn’t there haha!) so Thandie used these by Kiss (available at Walgreens) in ‘Shy’ with revolutionary tapered end technology, Thandie said “They look soo real“.
Generally speaking, to keep the chic and stay cool, both Thandie and I believe in ‘leaving something out’. Red Carpet cool does not have to be an oxymoron!
So Thandie simply lined her lips in Shea Moisture Long Wear Lip Pencil in Mediumand chucked her namesake sheer, natural lipstick by Julie Hewitt in her clutch.
