I was thrilled when Chanel asked me to make up singer Jorja Smith for their recent launch party for their new global ambassador, Lucia Pica.
A classically trained vocalist, Jorja is 19 years old and hails from Walsall, just outside of Birmingham and grew up to the sounds of Trojan Records boxsets, Curtis Mayfield and Damien Marley.
Her musical style is influenced by everyone from Mos Def to Lauryn Hill to The Streets and I have to say, her unique blend of musical storytelling hooked me in the first time I heard ‘A Prince’, Jorja’s follow up to the internet-breaking ‘Blue Lights.. After finishing her A-Levels last year, Jorja moved to London. With every major record label and publisher on both sides of the Atlantic wooing her, Jorja remains unsigned by choice. Jorja’s fans are certainly listening-her Spotfiy streams are fast approaching 4 million and her music videos have been viewed over 1 million times on YouTube.
What is your earliest beauty memory?
My mother has always told me I was beautiful to this present day.
I feel most beautiful when…….
I wake up and have a shower, my skin always feels the cleanest and looks the freshest. Always the start to a beautiful day.
Who do you find beautiful and why?
My very close friend Okimi, she’s a very natural and striking lady who I look up to a lot. But what’s even more beautiful is that it’s almost as if she doesn’t realise how beautiful she is.
When you were a child, what was your Mother’s beauty routine?
My mother has always had amazing clear skin. She always exfoliates and will use and day cream and a night cream. I’ve never seen her with foundation on or any thing on her skin, only mascara and a little bit of eyeliner.
Is make-up a chore or a delight?
Make-up is a delight! I love having my make-up done because it’s there to enhance beauty, it’s not there to cover anything up. However, it’s kind of a chore to do my own make-up because I’m not very good. I get concealer and lip liner spot on but it doesn’t go much further.
Did your father refer to your Mother’s beauty, and how?
He sees my mother how I see her, an amazing and beautiful creative woman.
What would you like to see more of in the beauty industry?
More women of colour and of all sorts of shapes and sizes.
When was the last time your mascara ran, and why?
Two days ago trying on a new mascara, my eyes water very easily!
If you could give one beauty ‘gift’, what would it be?
Sometimes it’s hard to picture how other people see yourself but you must believe that you’re always beautiful and once you can see and believe yourself, you will always stay shining.
