Everyone has heard the horror stories. Someone brought home a pretty bouquet full of lilies, only to see their pet cat helping themselves to a snack. One expensive vet trip or tiny funeral later, and you’ll have lots of questions and regrets, but no pet.
We get it! You love to nurture living things and you don’t want to worry about harming one when you introduce another! Luckily, some of the best houseplants are also pet-friendly houseplants.
If you want to liven up your space with plants for the home, read on to learn about six nontoxic plants that will get the job done – without any casualties!
1. African Violets
You don’t need to take a risk with a lily to introduce a beautiful pop of color into your home! African violets are beautiful purple and pink flowers that do well without the need for too much sunlight. Best of all, these nontoxic houseplants won’t harm your furry friends if they decide that those purple posies are too delectable to pass up!
Another flowering plant you might want to consider is alocasia, though that one is not for beginners!
2. Tillandsia Air Plants
Air plants are the ideal low maintenance house plants because they don’t even need soil to thrive! They are small, and only need a little bit of water once a week. Your pets will probably want to take a nibble, and while they’re harmless, they don’t look great with bite marks!
3. Friendship Plants
If you have a plant-loving friend, ask them for a cutting of their friendship plant! These hearty green plants are quick to grow and easily shared, which is how they got their name! Best of all, they provide the gift of not killing your dog, which is really what’s important!
4. Parlor Palms
Go big or go home! The parlor palm is a great introductory tree for new plant owners because it doesn’t have many needs. Growing between four and eight feet tall, your animals will love to bask in the shade of their own personal jungle!
5. Spider Plants
If your cat is anything like mine, they’re constantly hunting and eating spiders. By comparison, I’d much prefer to watch her take a nibble out of the nontoxic spider plant. All these attractive plants need is a little bit of sunlight and they can fill a room!
6. Indoor Herbs
If you can’t beat them, join them, right? You’re supposed to eat indoor herb plants, so why not grow some lavender or basil? If you really want to be an overachiever you can even grow your own catnip or cat grass!
