7 Major Signs That You Need an HVAC Repair

June 28, 2021 · Cherry · Leave a Comment

Summer would be a difficult season to get through without the help of air conditioning. In high temperatures, heat indoors can be stifling but AC helps to relieve the struggle by circulating cool air through your home. However, when your AC system isn’t working, you may notice some changes.

If the air quality isn’t what you’re used to, you may need professional HVAC repair. Take a look at these sure signs that you need to get your AC system checked out.

1. You’re Not Getting Air

The most noticeable sign that your AC system isn’t working is a lack of air. If Summer hits and you turn on your AC, you’ll notice quickly that it isn’t circulating cool air. It can get uncomfortable indoors without your AC on.

If your home isn’t cooling down, you’ll need to call a professional, like Larsen Heating and Air, to check your system. It may be a problem with the compressor or air ducts.

2. You’re Only Getting Warm Air

The last thing you need blowing out of your AC system is warm air. It’s a massive anti-climax when you expect soothing cold air and get a face full of warm air instead. If this is the case, keeping your AC on will only lead to heating your home further.

Get in touch with your repair company and ask them to take a look. This could also be a sign of a broken compressor or you may need your refrigerant levels corrected.

3. What’s That Strange Noise?

Strange noises at home aren’t often welcome and aren’t often good news. If you pinpoint the noise coming from your AC unit, you need to ask yourself some questions. If your HVAC unit always makes low noises and it’s a sound you’re used to, it could be fine.

So, ask yourself if the noise is new or louder. New or louder noises often signal problems. It could be anything from fan belt trouble to blockages or bearings in the fan. The only way to find out for sure is to hire someone who knows what they’re looking at.

4. Pungent Smells

If the new stench in your home isn’t your smelly socks, it’s coming from somewhere else. Foul odors coming from your AC system can indicate a significant problem. It could be an electrical problem or it could be the presence of mold in your AC unit.

These are serious health and safety dangers for you and your family, so it’s important to call an HVAC repair company as soon as possible. An electric fault will smell similar to burning, whereas mold will have a musty smell.

5. High Humidity

Heat isn’t the only clue to a broken HVAC system. Many systems have an inbuilt dehumidifier which helps to reduce humidity indoors. High humidity levels can be just as difficult to deal with as high heat.

It’s not just about what it will do to your hair either. High humidity is a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria, including mold. The longer the system doesn’t work, the higher the moisture levels in your home.

6. Leaking

You can expect a small amount of moisture to gather near your AC system when it’s in use. The system needs to expel a small amount for all the heat it’s dealing with. However, small pools of water or discolored water are not normal.

This could be a problem with your refrigerant. If it is, the moisture could be toxic and should be kept far away from children or pets.

7. Increasing Utility Bills

If you’re using your utilities to make up for your AC system not working as well, you may be seeing an increase in your bills. If the money you’re spending doesn’t justify having your AC unit, there’s a clear problem.

This usually indicates that your AC unit isn’t working sufficiently enough to keep your bill balanced. It’s worth calling out an AC engineer to find out why your AC isn’t working as it should.

How Many Times Are You Calling For AC Repair?

If you’ve noticed that you’re suddenly frequently calling someone to repair your AC unit, that may be a sign of a bigger problem. All HVAC units have a lifespan and maybe yours has come to the end. If you’ve had it repaired a few times in the last 6 months, it may be time to look at replacement instead.

The more money you spend on repairs, the more it makes sense to invest in a new system. Ask your professional for advice on new systems and what kind of guarantees they come with. Your new system should also be installed by a professional for your peace of mind.

Solving the Problem: Calling HVAC Repair

Your AC system is an asset in your home. It’s an investment in your and your family’s health in the long term. But, when they don’t work properly they can make things worse for everyone.

Calling someone for HVAC repair is the smartest thing you can do. Trying to fix the problem yourself could cause more damage and waste more money. When it comes to providing your family with the best air conditioning throughout the year, only a professional will do.
