Anti-Aging Action: How to Improve Skin Elasticity

What’s the big deal about collagen?

From powders to capsules to injections and so on, it seems like collagen products aren’t going away anytime soon. Do they work, though? That is the question.

Besides playing a role in healing and helping tendons stretch, collagen is what gives skin strength and elasticity. So if you’re wondering how to improve skin elasticity, collagen is one answer, but it’s not the only solution.

That said, let’s talk about all the best ways to boost skin elasticity.

Stay Hydrated

Just drinking water won’t keep the wrinkles away, but it helps when done consistently in combination with other anti-aging tips.

As you age, your skin’s barrier function declines, making it more prone to TEWL (transepidermal water loss). Drinking water and other beverages fortified with minerals and electrolytes can help reduce TEWL or moisture loss.

Now, if you’re unsure how much to drink, a good rule is to drink half your body weight. For example, if you’re 160 pounds, aim to drink 80 ounces of water daily.

Reduce Stress

If you think stress is making you look haggard, it’s not just your imagination. Cortisol, or the stress hormone, breaks down collagen in the skin.

The higher your stress levels, the more cortisol your body produces, making it harder for your skin to rebuild collagen. Consider a stress-reduction plan that may or may not incorporate regular exercise, journaling, breathwork, outdoor activities, etc.

Try Retinol and Vitamin B3

Many products for mature skin work through skin exfoliation. That means they get rid of dead skin cells, which can lead to clogged pores and flaky patches if not removed.

Meanwhile, retinol and retinoids, which are vitamin A derivatives, go down to the deeper layers of the skin. Here, they neutralize free radicals and stimulate collagen and elastin production. With regular use, retinol can effectively minimize wrinkles, fine lines, and enlarged pores.

However, retinoids have a downside. They can increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun. If you can’t use retinol for whatever reason (e.g., allergy or fear of the so-called retinol burn), you can try vitamin B3.

As niacinamide or nicotinic acid, vitamin B3 can help reduce collagen breakdown. It can also prevent moisture loss by strengthening the skin barrier.

Consider Using Stem Cells

Can stem cells be the answer to your skin elasticity woes?

If you’re picturing placentas, bone marrow samples, embryos, etc., you have nothing to worry about. Stem cells in skincare products are plant-based. These include raspberry leaf extract, white tea leaf extract, Gotu kola, and so on.

Plant-based stem cells signal the body’s cells to regenerate, making the skin look younger. You can check out anbiome.com to learn more about stem cells in skincare products.
