Breast Augmentation: The Do’s and Don’ts of Aftercare

March 3, 2022 · Cherry · Leave a Comment

Woman breast with bandage surgery health care

Breast augmentation, also known as a boob job, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that aims to enhance the appearance and firmness of a person’s breasts.

It is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States. More than 300,000 surgeries are carried out each year, making it more popular than nose reshaping, liposuction, eyelid surgery, and tummy tucks. There has been an almost 50% increase in breast augmentations performed in the US since 2000.

If you are planning to get a breast augmentation, it is important to first understand the recovery process. Read on as we highlight the dos and don’ts of breast augmentation aftercare.

Breast Augmentation Aftercare Best Practices

In the first few days following your breast augmentation procedure, it is normal to experience some discomfort. Your doctor will likely have prescribed medication that you should take to reduce any pain.

You should rest as much as possible during the first week of recovery. While minor bleeding at the incision sites is normal, you can speak to your surgeon if you have any concerns.

A week after the operation, you can continue to take over-the-counter pain medications to deal with any pain. Around this time, depending on your surgeon’s advice, you should be able to resume light activities.

Over the following weeks, you should avoid intense physical activities such as going to the gym and running. You may need to take extra time off from work if your job is physically demanding.

At the 2-month stage of your recovery, depending on your progress, you may be able to resume normal activities, based on your doctor’s advice. Always listen to your surgeon, doctor, and your own body as you continue to recover.

What to Avoid During Breast Augmentation Recovery

It is likely that your surgeon will provide you with a full rundown of what to avoid during the aftercare stage. It is important that you do not let your breasts get wet during the first few weeks, whether in the shower, bath, or pool.

Smoking is also discouraged during the aftercare stage, and it can have an impact on your ability to properly heal.

Also, avoid wearing underwire bras, as these may prevent the implants from settling properly into the correct position. A surgical or sports bra is recommended.

Other don’ts include sleeping on your stomach, taking any medications without consulting with your doctor, and sunbathing during the first month after the surgery.

The Dos and Don’ts of Breast Augmentation Aftercare

The recovery time following breast augmentation surgery is approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Never rush your aftercare, and listen to the advice of your surgeon and doctor. Listen, also, to your body, and put the focus on resting as much as possible.
