CBD vs CBG: What’s Are the Differences?

March 23, 2022 · Cherry · Leave a Comment

Did you know that there are over 100 cannabinoids? Yet the one we pay most attention to is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the one that gets you “high”.

There are many other cannabinoids that can benefit us, such as CBD, which has exploded in popularity recently. Another of interest is CBG, a lesser-known yet promising cannabinoid.

To learn more about CBD vs CBG, keep reading. We explain the differences below.

About CBD

CBD (cannabidiol) is THC’s close cousin, considering that it has many of the same properties. Because you can get it from hemp plants (they contain under 0.3% THC), it’s completely legal to use CBD on a federal level. This is in thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill.

This cannabinoid was first isolated in the 1930s, but there wasn’t much interest in it. Scientists regained interest in CBD in the 1970s when they saw its potential as an anticonvulsant.

About CBG

CBG (cannabigerol) is a cannabinoid first isolated in the 1960s. You can get it from either a hemp or marijuana plant.

First, CBG starts off as CBGA (cannabigerolic acid), which you can only find in young cannabis plants. As time goes on and the plant grows, CBGA breaks down into 2 acids: cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA).

The plant then converts these 2 acids into CBD and THC. If there is any CBGA left after these chemical reactions, then you’ll get CBG.

CBD Benefits

As we’ve mentioned above, CBD is used as an anticonvulsant. In fact, it’s one of the only FDA-approved epilepsy drugs (Epidiolex).

Some research has shown that CBD can be effective in treating nausea, pain, anxiety, and depression. But because marijuana has been illegal for so long, we need more studies done before we can get conclusive results.

What we do know is CBD doesn’t have psychoactive effects. So you don’t need to worry about being impaired when using CBD.

CBG Benefits

CBG has been studied even less than CBD has, so there are only preliminary studies done so far. But the good news is, this cannabinoid seems to have some good effects too.

CBG might be useful for inflammation, pain, infections (it has antibacterial properties), depression, and cancer. CBG also doesn’t have psychoactive effects, so you won’t get high when using it.

This guide shows you more about CBG if you want to know more about this cannabinoid.

CBD vs CBG: Both Have Great Potential

If you’re debating about CBD vs CBG, both have their strengths, and some even overlap. CBD is probably easier to find, so it’s best to start off with this cannabinoid.

If you’re lucky, you just might find products that include both. If so, then give those a try, as you’ll be able to take advantage of the potential benefits each offers!
