Nearly 100 million homes in the United States have some form of air conditioning. An HVAC system plays a crucial role in regulating the temperature of your home, and in the warmer months, it is an essential tool to help you stay cool and battle the summer heat.

With all those AC units up and down the country, some of them are destined to break. If you’re reading this article, then it’s likely that you’re unlucky enough to have one of these broken units.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about HVAC leak detection. A leak is one of the most common problems you’ll experience with your system.

1. Only Warm Air Coming Through

If you’re not getting enough air through your system, or worse, only getting warm air, then it could be a sign of a refrigerant leak. There are a few things you should check for first though.

The first thing you should do is check whether or not the air conditioner is set to the fan setting. Then you should check the filters. Filters often get clogged and need replacing regularly, especially if it’s been a while since your AC installation.

If you’re still having air flow trouble or only getting warm air after checking these things, then it’s likely to be a refrigerant leak.

2. Strange Noises

Next, you should listen out for any strange noises that your system is making. You should be especially mindful of any hissing noises that your HVAC system is emitting.

If it’s hissing like this, then that’s a big sign that you’ve got a refrigerant leak and you’re going to need some AC repair or possibly even a full HVAC replacement.

Should you be in any need of a repair, then follow this URL.

3. Frozen AC Coils

If your system is working, then the warm air will run over the AC coils and it will be cooled down. However, if your refrigerant is leaking, then you’ll likely find that the coils have frozen.

Take a look at your AC coils to see whether or not they are frozen over.

4. Rising Humidity Levels

Your HVAC system doesn’t just cool the air in the house, it also carries out the important task of regulating the humidity in your home. Too much humidity is bad for your health.

Rising humidity levels are also a sign that your HVAC system is struggling to operate properly and that you may have a leak in the system.

5. Increasing Cooling Costs

Finally, take a look at your bills. It’s perfectly normal for costs to rise during the warmer months, but if your AC bill suddenly skyrockets while your usage stays the same, then that’s a sign that something is wrong.

The costs are attributed to your system consuming way more refrigerant than it normally would because some or perhaps even all of it is being siphoned out by the leak.

HVAC Leak Detection Will Save You Money

A leak in your HVAC system can be annoying, but more than that, it can be costly. That’s why HVAC leak detection is so important. Just look out for the things listed in this guide and you’ll be able to spot a leak in no time and book yourself in for a repair.
