The Different Types of Boats: A Simple Guide

May 17, 2022 · Cherry · Leave a Comment

Did you know that nearly fifty billion dollars were spent on recreational boating in 2020? That’s reported to be the highest profit to the industry in thirteen years.

Boats are something that many people dream about owning, although it’s usually in rather nebulous terms. If you’ve ever thought about owning a boat, it’s time for you to make sure you know about the different types of boats.

After all, if you’re thinking about getting into boating, it’s important that you know what boat options are available to you.

Different Types of Boats

If you’re looking at driving a boat, odds are you won’t be considering boats such as fishing trawlers or tug boats. The kind of boat you want also depends on the water you live by.

For example, if you’re near a small lake or a pond, you’ll probably want to go with a dingy. These boats are twelve to fifteen feet long and fit for shallow water. They can be made of either hard wood or inflatable rubber, and are perfect if you’re looking for something low-cost and maintenance.

If you want a little more adventure, you could consider a sailboat. Sailboats contain two sails that aim to capture the wind and, combined with water drag, allow the boat to move. These boats have been around a long time – paintings have been found of sailboats as far back as Ancient Egypt.

As far as motorized boats go, a good option is a cuddy cabin boat. These boats are more for spending time with family than anything. They provide excellent control while cruising and have a small cabin space for storage.

If you do like to fish, a center console boat is probably best for you. These boats are specifically designed with working space for fishing in mind and can fit up to seven people depending on size.

What if I Don’t Want to Own a Boat?

If owning a boat isn’t for you and you still want to go boating, that’s alright. There are options for you. There are many benefits of boating (such as relaxation and restoration) and it would be a shame for you to miss out on them.

Something in particular you should consider doing is bareboating. Bareboating is the practice of hiring and driving a boat on your own. Bareboating for a day is all the fun of owning a boat and none of the maintenance that comes with boating.

It’s known as “bare” boating because you are given no crew or skipper and do it on your own. For this same reason, bareboating is also referred to as a “skipper yourself” charter.
