What Are the Different Types of Dental Implants That Exist Today?

April 27, 2022 · Cherry · Leave a Comment

Have you lost confidence in your smile due to missing teeth? Have you considered dental implants but want to know more about the types of dental implants available?

Dental implants are a great solution to restore your smile and your dental health. Dental implants are becoming one of the most common dental procedures, with over 3 million dental implants placed each year in the US.

Keep reading to learn all about dental implants and what types of dental implants might be right for you.

Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants act as replacement tooth roots that provide the foundation to replace missing teeth. There are different types of implants you can get, depending on your overall dental health.

The most common implant types include:

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are one of the best dental implants used today. Endosteal implants provide the most stability as they’re placed directly into the jawbone.

You’ll need enough jawbone to be able to get endosteal implants. If your jawbone is worn down by disease or trauma, it’s possible you won’t have enough bone to support these types of implants.

Some people are able to get a bone grafting procedure which includes transplanting healthy bone tissue that will regenerate to replace the missing bone. After this procedure, your jaw bone will be healthy enough to support endosteal implants.

During the procedure, your dentist will drill into your jawbone and insert a titanium screw that serves as an artificial root. You’ll need to wait at least 3 to 4 months for your bone and soft tissue to heal around the titanium post. Once this heals, you’ll be custom fitted with a crown that will look and feel like a natural tooth.

You can get single tooth implants, multiple tooth implants, or implanted supported dentures with endosteal implants.

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are not often used today, primarily because they offer less stability than endosteal implants do. People who lack enough healthy jawbone for endosteal implants, and are unable to get a bone grafting procedure will sometimes choose to get subperiosteal implants.

These types of implants go directly on the jawbone, just inside the gum tissue. Subperiosteal implants do not penetrate the jawbone in any way. They are only held in place by the soft tissue surrounding them.

Many people use implant dentures with subperiosteal implants as they offer more support than traditional removable dentures.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Implant dental treatments can improve your overall quality of life and even restore your ability to chew your food normally. Other benefits include:

  • Restores your appearance
  • Improves confidence
  • Preserves the health of your gums and jawbone
  • Helps to keep nearby teeth stable
  • More comfortable than traditional dentures
  • Very durable and can last a lifetime with proper care

Cost of Dental Implants

The cost of dental implants varies, depending on the country you live in. In Australia, dental implants cost between $3,000 and $6,000 per tooth.

In the US and Canada, you’ll see costs ranging from $1,500 to $6,000 per tooth. You also have to factor in the costs of any x-rays, bone grafting procedures, or tooth extractions you might need.
