Many adults find that it is difficult to find and maintain friendships. After all, life as an adult is often busy and filled with things we consider “more important.” However, friendship is actually considered good for your health.
Friendship allows you to de-stress, have a sense of belonging, cope with traumas, and encourage healthier habits. Forming that emotional connection to others can be difficult if you don’t know where to meet them! Read on to find five ways to meet new people!
1. Join a Group or Take a Class
Have a hobby that you really enjoy? There are plenty of groups out there who regularly meet up. These groups are often formed by those who have a real knack for a certain hobby.
Local groups are a great way to meet new people because you already know you have at least one thing in common. If you don’t have a hobby you’re really invested in yet, try taking a class to see if you like it.
Don’t be shy! People join groups like this to be around others!
Volunteering is another amazing opportunity when it comes to how to meet new people. Not only will you be able to expand your network but you’ll be making a difference in the world at the same time.
You’ll have peace of mind knowing that those who are volunteering with you are there to put good out into the universe. There’s also a study that says having friends actually triggers empathy. So maybe you’ll both be more interested in doing more volunteering!
3. Meet Your Neighbors
It’s easy to come home and kick off your shoes but there are plenty of people right outside your front door. Wondering where to meet new people? Try right at home!
Building a community and relationship with your neighbors is both beneficial and easy. Neighbors can watch out for each other. Plus, you can eliminate having to travel far to see them when you make friends in the neighborhood.
The church is a welcoming and wonderful opportunity in terms of how to make new friends. Most churches provide services and programs for adults and kids of all ages. These might include small groups, volunteer opportunities, and Sundays!
If you’re already going to church, make an effort to get to know some of the people there and get more involved in the great programs they have. This is something you can get your whole family involved in. Click for more information on how to get involved.
Some people prefer to clock in and clock out. If that’s you, that’s ok! But when you’re looking to make friends, work might be one of the easiest places.
Try talking to some of the people you haven’t had much conversation with. Some workplaces have their own hangouts to boost community. Try attending one next time. If your work doesn’t have one, try starting one!
